Appearance
Astrid has a short, broad frame and dense fur that makes her body look even thicker than it really is. She always wears practical, comfortable clothes, with little care for appearances. Lots of flannels and camo in her wardrobe. Heels are out of the question. Her face is stern, and her eyes are yellow and severe. She doesn't mean to look so intense, she just has a rather flat affect. She always has, even as a little girl.
Some might call Astrid a handsome young woman. She's never been good at knowing if a remark like that is supposed to be a backhanded compliment or a sincere one. At the end of the day, she doesn't particularly care. Astrid doesn't feel pressured to impress anyone but herself and her professors, particularly when it comes to something as frivolous as appearances.
Tunnel-vision
Astrid is a surprisingly passionate person. She has a limited scope in terms of what warrants her time and energy, but when she's decided she cares about something, she is nigh unshakably committed to it.
Her family takes priority above all else. Their relationship feels so steady and supportive and natural, that she sometimes forgets that not everyone can say the same of their family. She has a lot of unthinking little assumptions like that, about family and hard-work. She's an all-American girl in this sense.
Astrid considers herself pretty enlightened when it comes to social issues – sex and drugs don't phase her (half her neighbors grow pot), she's an Atheist, and overall believes the law ought to leave people alone. But as she moves up from her local high-school to the very colorful nearby college town, she feels increasingly out of place. She isn't used to feeling like a hick.
She's self-aware enough to know that an insecurity like that is beneath her. It's just pointless vanity. What matters is getting a good start on her higher education, and in this, she's right in her element.
Strange Sighting
Astrid knows she shouldn't be out in the woods past nightfall, and certainly not on her own. But the beauty of the starry sky, the mild, crisp, clear air, and her desire to use her camera for something other than a school assignment all called to her.
She went about the pleasantly familiar ritual of setting up her gear, eyeing the shot she wanted, lining it up then... Whoosh came a great arching light, nearly blinding her with its flash. Whatever it was, it crashed into the woods nearby. Near enough, in fact, that she could hike to it.
As she drew near, the air turned sour, and a powerful migraine pounded through her skull. Every part of her, every instinct that ruled her senses demanded she turn around, scurry home, and hide away in her safe, warm little bed. This she did happily, but she wouldn't neglect her curiosity. She'd simply go back the next day with a shotgun.
